ZAYED MARATHON:
Stars in town for Zayed Marathon
Abu Dhabi: Current Half Marathon record holder Lorna Kiplagat of The Netherlands arrived here yesterday to take a shot at the world's richest long distance race - the Zayed Marathon to be run over 21km tomorrow.
Kiplagat, fresh from her victory in Puerto Rico in a 10km race on Sunday, arrived here yesterday morning and said she was looking forward to a strong race.
The Zayed Marathon, which has men and women running over 21km and two other 7km and 4km events, is being held under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs, with the total prize money being a whopping $2 million.
"Thursday's race will be a very competitive affair and there is already a buzz among the long distance runners over this race," Kiplagat told Gulf News. Kiplagat, along with the other runners, will be eyeing the $200,000 bonus for a new record in the Half Marathon distance of 21km.
"I did take part in the Dubai Marathon, but did not complete. However, I am looking forward to a good race on Thursday and with almost all the top runners taking part, it is going to be an exciting contest," said the 33-year-old Dutch.
Meanwhile, the Zayed Marathon race director, Mohammad Al Ameri, said the men's record holder in Half Marathon, Samuel Kaman Wanjiru, had also confirmed his entry.
"Samuel's timing of 58 minutes 33 seconds and Kiplagat's women's record at 1 hr 06 min 25 sec are both likely to be under threat," he said.
"Apart from the winner's prize of $300,000 each, there is a bonus of $200,000 for a new record. The Zayed Marathon is now the richest Marathon in the world," said Al Ameri.
Former marathon record holder Paul Tergat from Kenya leads a strong field of runners for the men's title while Kiplagat will be the favourite in the women's section.
"A few athletes like Kiplagat and Nathalie Harvey have already arrived. Most of the others will come in later tonight and tomorrow," said Al Ameri.
Major General Mohammad Hilal Al Ka'abi, Deputy Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Zayed International Marathon organising committee, said: "We have received a confirmation from the Education Ministry that between 12,000 and 14,000 students will be running and the number could go up."

TYSON:
Tyson’s life may be made into film
Ex-pugilist says he is off the drugs
If happiness in the ring is a thing of the past, the deal is to give another realm of the entertainment industry a shot. Once knows as “Iron Mike”, Mike Tyson this week announced he is working on turning his life into a movie, to be produced by a big studio in Hollywood.
“I’m thinking of producing a film, probably two years from now. Jamie Foxx and I will be working together. He will play me in the film about my life. We already talked about it several times,” said Tyson, during a visit to a center for juvenile delinquents, in Las Vegas.
While talking to the youths, Tyson revealed that for the first time in his life he is free of drugs, and that only happened because of time spent in a rehabilitation clinic after having been thrown in jail in 2006 for cocaine.
“I learned a lot about the system. I had never been clean and sober my whole life. This is the first time. Even when I was training for a fight, there were no drugs, but I would drink. I’m tired of losing. I lost the trust of my family, my five kids. I didn’t like that way of life and decided to change. I saw the devil and didn’t want that,” he finished.

Elan Santiago in Korea
Black belt teaches seminars in South Korea and Japan
Colleague of Fernando Terere and leader of important social projects having to do with Jiu-Jitsu, the black belt from Rio de Janeiro Elan Santiago broke his routine of going up and down the Cantagalo hill and doing the rounds in Nilopolis. As he’s done since 2005, Elan has been spreading Jiu-Jitsu throughout South Korea, where besides local practitioners he is being called on by American military personnel in the region. In his suitcase, besides the gi and belt, he carries copies of GRACIE Magazine, to take some theory that he, in his seminars, shows in practice.
“Bro, I’m now going to teach a class that starts at 11:30 pm, local time, and only ends at 10 to one in the morning, can you believe it? And it’s ten degrees below zero, my foot is purple from the cold, but I’m stoked! Here I’m stoked cold,” Elan commented to GRACIEMAG.com.
“In 2005 I went to Korea to spend six months teaching Jiu-Jitsu in the now-extinct TT Korea, of Kang – a Korean brown belt of ours. With the end of TT Jiu-Jitsu, we put together Action Reaction JJ Korea, with Rubens Cobrinha, me and Kang taking responsibility for it. Periodically, Cobrinha and I go to Korea to do seminars and spend time teaching there and in the academies of others. I’ve had big seminars over there and had the honor of making great friends, like Tozi black belt Gustavo Falciroli. With him we did seminars all over Korea, including in a gigantic American military base, with tons of rangers, marines, those guys that let it break and never tap out, just tough guys,” Elan recollects. “This time I’ll stay until March 19th, and then one week in Japan, maybe on the way back General Fabio Gurgel will hook up some gigs in Germany.”

THE 1ST ANNUAL CHARLES GRACIE INVITATIONAL JIU-JITSU TOURNAMENT 2008!
Saturday, April 26th!!!
With this year being the anniversary of my tenth year in America I want to announce a special event to celebrate my coming to this country to bring the art of my family to my students. I wish to formally announce the First Annual Charles Gracie Invitational Jiu-Jitsu Tournament 2008. The competition will be held here in Northern California, on Saturday, April 26th, in the Main Gym of Williams Middle School located at 1600 Tennis Lane Tracy, California 95376. The date is certain and you need to begin preparation for the competition.
For some time I have been interested in conducting a closed tournament for the academies in the Charles Gracie Network. At the same time, to add an element of hospitality I want also to invite certain members of the academies of those who have been my long term friends and associates in the world of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I expect the event to be a big event.
I expect over 300 athletes and many spectators, family and friends with exciting matches and special events. I hope to make this a family friendly celebration of sportsmanship among friends.
This event will be an opportunity to meet, and enjoy the competition of, all my students and their families, as well as the fine instructors, from all my academies, but also those of my closest friends. An event in which everyone can test the skills that all have learned and earned from the instructors in our world class academies.
In the interest of making this a big success for everyone I want every student to know that I strongly urge all the students in the Charles Gracie Network to participate in this event. I’m counting on you to be there.
Let’s get ready to rumble! Charles Gracie
