Lucky 13 . . . Shades of Rio at the Long Beach Pyramid
A sensational 13th edition of BJJ's greatest event has just completed with Xande Ribeiro stealing the show. In a Rio'esque atmosphere with team cheering sections conducting "chant sparring" with each other creating a great atmosphere to crown a new Absolute Champion. Ribeiro won both his weight and the absolute topping favorite Roger Gracie in a well contested ginal by a score of 4 x 2. Xande opened the score early with a takedown and Roger evened things out a few minutes later with a sweep. The fight started standing again after a scramble and Xande got the victries takedown on Roger with a little more than a minute to go in the match repeating the result of their finals in 2006 with Xande taking the Gold.
Both Xande and Roger won their respective weight divisions, Roger defeating Leo Leoite and Xande beating Alexandre Souza. An in form Andre Galvao submitted Braulio Estima with a choke from the back in the medium-heavy while Rubens "Cobrinha" submitted Bruno Frazzato with a toe-hold late in their match. Celsinho Vinicius won antoher title defeating last year's Champion Lucas Lepri. Samuel Braga beat Japanese guard player Dai Yoshioka whiel Caio Terra beat Yushuke Homma for the Rooster weight. Sergio Moraes ended his drem event with a win over an in form Bill Cooper to take the medium Gold. Cooper had submitted every opponent until he faced Moraes. Antonio Braga Neto beat Rafael Lovato Jr by points to take the super-heavy title
In the ladies it was Kyra taking the weight and the absolute with a win over Luana Alzuguir in the weight and closing the Absolute with er teammate Ana Clara Cordeiro. Ana beat Penny Thomas for the medium heavy while Gabriella Garcia defeated Mario do Camro for the Heavy. Miriam Cerquira over Takato Abe, while Bianca Barreto beat Laurence Cousin for the feather.

Kron Gracie loses debut in BB -
Kyra Gracie in the Absolute Ladies Finals
After a long day of fights and excitement the Black Belt Absolute finals are set, a repeat of the 2006 finals, Roger Gracie v Xande Ribeiro. Both fighters appeared to be at another level defeating everybody along their path. Roger defeated Andre Galvao ina great semi-final match while Xande beat Gabriel Vella on the other side of the bracket. Tomorrow the rematch is on, the two best fighters of the day meet up for the Gold
Kron Gracie's debut in the Black Belt division did not go as he had hoped to say the least. After quickly falling behind to Sergio Moraes takedowns Kron seemd out of his game while Sergio was presing the issue in full form. After passing the guard Sergio moutned Kron and took the fight with a choke submission for side/back control. Moraes went on to defeat another early favorite in Augusto "Tio Chico" Vieira on his next match. Other notables in the category Victor Estima subbed his first two opponent's while Lucas Leite and Cassio Werneck advanced as well on that side of the bracket. Bill Cooper and Alan "Fifou" Nascimento advanced on the other side.
Kyra Gracie is in the ladies absolute with a stellar performance. Kyra had the "eye of the tiger" look and beat a tough field to close in on the Gold closing the bracket with her teammate Ana Laura Cordeiro.
Weight Ins are serious business . . . no exceptions: To those "conspiracy theoristics" who think there is any favoritism on BJJ the myth wasdispelled today as Gregor Gracie was eliminated by the scale for being 1/2 over the weight. Gregor missed the weight and since there is only weight chance he was not allowed to compete!

Black belt Anderson Pereira, leader of BTT Geneve and GMA member in Switzerland, is always searching for ways of improving the level of learning of his students. With that in mind, he invited Thiago Tavares, BJJ black belt and UFC star (13-1) for a seminar.
The class is scheduled June 21st at the academy headquarters, in Geneve. Tavares will teach BJJ and Submission Grappling techniches. Those interested must enroll trhough the email address iponit77@hotmail.com. For more info, go to bttandersonpereira.blogspot.com.

Four cities chosen as 2016 Games candidates
ATHENS - Chicago, Tokyo, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro were named on Wednesday as candidate cities to host the 2016 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said.
The candidate cities must now compile an in-depth file of their Olympic project and submit themselves to a visit by the IOC's Evaluation Commission. The election of the host city will take place on Oct. 2 2009 at the IOC Session in Copenhagen.

Carlos Santos , head coach emirates bjj team and all the team, today mourned the death of Sheikh Nasser bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
also extended his condolences to President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and to the rest of the Al Nahyan family.
Shaikh Nasser died on Monday night when the helicopter carrying him and his colleagues crashed over Gulf waters.

Shaikh Nasser died on Monday night when the helicopter carrying him and his colleagues crashed over Gulf waters.
In a statement, the Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced a three-day mourning period starting Tuesday.
Offices in the government, public and private sectors will continue to work as normal, an authorised source at the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs said.
Funeral prayers for Shaikh Nasser and his colleagues will be performed at the Shaikh Sultan Bin Zayed Mosque in Al Bateen.
