Jiu-Jitsu to invade New York

IBJJF announces No-Gi Pan-Am
Another proof that Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t stop growing in the United States. Traditionally concentrated in California, the biggest gi events (Worlds and Pan-American) will now have the company of a “cousin” on the East Coast. The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJFF) has just announced the creation of the No-Gi Pan-American Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

The competition is scheduled for the 4th of October, and will be held at the traditional New York City College.
The promoters’ expectation is for the no-gi Pan to attain the same success as the no-gi Worlds, whose second edition is set for the 9th and 10th of August, in Carson, California.
Stay tuned for more information on the No-Gi Pan-American

DOJO:

Dojo Etiquette:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Dojos tend to teach in a more relaxed and less rigid atmosphere than traditional martial arts. Nonetheless, in order to maintain a positive environment that is both conducive to learning and welcoming to potential students, we require our students, parents of students in the kids’ classes, and staff to adhere to the following Dojo Etiquette guidelines.

Guidelines

1. Always show respect to your instructors, training partners, and fellow human beings. Respect in training means: do not seek to harm fellow students physically (e.g., by cranking a submission harder than necessary to make them tap) or emotionally (i.e., by calling them names or making jokes about hurting them). Respect also means that you must train seriously and hard enough for you and your partner to improve his or her skills, conditioning, and fighting spirit. Not giving your best during training detracts from both you and your partner’s experience.

2. Maintain good hygiene (i.e., shower and brush your teeth regularly). As you can imagine, it is difficult to concentrate on technique when you find your partner’s smells distracting!

3. Keep finger and toe nails short and clean to prevent injury to yourself and others.

4. Bring a clean, dry gi to each class. Also, always keep a rash guard or T-shirt in your gym bag for no-gi classes.

5. Keep shoes off the mat, so that we can keep the mats clean and sanitary.

6. Do not walk outside with bare feet. If you have to go outside, wear sandals or shoes. Items (5) and (6) are especially important to prevent the spread of skin conditions such as ringworm.

7. Do not shout loudly or use profanity in the dojo. This should go without saying.

8. Do not talk while the instructor is talking. It distracts those who are trying to learn and is disrespectful to the teacher, as well as other students.

9. Stand, sit with your legs crossed, or kneel during class. No lounging. Studies show that people learn more effectively when seated in upright postures.

10. Please wear your gi, a T-shirt, or a tank top while in public areas of the Dojo. No bare backs!

11. Do not leave the mat during class without the instructor’s permission.

12. Keep cell phones off during class. Again, they distract those who are trying to learn.

13. If the instructor has not changed the task, then continue doing the task he or she has given (i.e., don’t sit around talking because you feel you have done a technique enough times). You can NEVER do a technique too many times.

Alliance dominated men’s adult division

With the end of another World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, it is time to recover from defeat or rejoice in the good results from long months of training. It can be said that Fabio Gurgel, one of the leaders of Alliance, is one of the most accomplished people after the great tournament that took place last weekend in Long Beach, California.

The “General,” as his athletes call him, didn’t add another gold medal to his record as a fighter, but led a big, historical win for Alliance in the teams dispute, beating Gracie Humaita and multiple champion Gracie Barra in the men’s adult division.

“It was incredible. It was the fruit of our work toward renewal. It all went right, the team was all well trained. He were coming in a crescendo since last year. This year we won the Pan-American and we did well at both the São Paulo Championship and Circuit, so we knew we had a big chance. We achieve a historical landmark. We have great athletes, we worked very hard, we went well organized since the pre-season until the final preparation in Atlanta. We got sponsoring, everybody got their visa and got to the peak of their physical preparation,” Gurgel told GRACIEMAG.com, unable to hide his happiness.

Also, the four-time world black belt champion had the joy of having two of his pupils consecrated in two of the toughest black belt weight classes: feather and middleweight. Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles showed why he was favorite and strolled by the featherweights, achieving his third title.
“Cobrinha is one of our standouts. He is a three-time champ, but has the motivation of someone who’s never won a thing. He is way above the rest, because he is always motivated and prepared. I find it hard for someone to beat him at that weight any time soon. He is an exceptional athlete,” explained the General.

The big news, however, was Sergio Moraes, who came without been very well-known, opened everyone’s eyes as he submitted Kron Gracie in the first fight of the middleweight category, and ended up winning one of the most difficult weight classes in Jiu-Jitsu.

“I knew he going to be champion. They started talking about him for being matched up against Kron, who is a sensation and came from a wonderful year as a brown belt. But we always knew about Sergio’s potential. It was a complicated weight class, but we were fortunate and many people were surprised. Many didn’t know him, because he is very humble and had no money or support, but now, with us, he is going to show everyone the great talent he has,” said the proud commander

Black belt tries hand at acting

Debuting today in Brazilian cinemas is the second in the famous Marvel comics series, "The Incredible Hulk". The Hollywood production, with its millions upon millions of dollars in budget, is directed by Louis Leterrier and is worldwide success.

The news is that the Brazilian audience will see a familiar images during several moments, as the Rocinha favela, the BOPE (elite police squad) and Jiu-Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie take part in the piece starred by Edward Norton.

Rickson's role in the movie is that of an aikido instructor, who tries to teach Norton's character (Bruce Banner) a little self-control and discipline, so that he might control his rage and not transform into the giant green monster.
