Saturday was the first day of the (besides the regular BJJ Worlds crowd) Black Belts competition in the Worlds. A star studded audience with great guests like Rickson Gracie, Wanderlei Silva, Ricardo arona, Paulo Filho witnessed a day with lots of submissions, surprises and controversy.
Submissions were taken care of by especially by Roger Gracie, Xande Ribeiro & Marcelo Garcia. Roger submitted all his opponents in the absolute divison while Xande submitted all but one of his and both will meet tomorrow in the finals. Garcia submitted everyone he faced until he met Roger in the semi's and was the victim of another one of Roger's chokes.
Upsets were courtesy of 'Cyborg' who submitted Braulio Estima (arm-lock) and then disposed of Demian Maia (points) in the quarter finals before succumbing to Xande in the semi's as well.

The controversy of the night involved Mike Fowler. During his match with former World Champion Daniel Moraes, Fowler caught Daniel in what looked like a final arm-lock only to have Moraes slam him for an apparent disqualification. The referee inexplicably did not do it and the fight went on to the finish with Moraes winning it by points. As the fight ended Fowler and coaches Lloyd Irvin and Leo Dalla vehemently protested to no avail, the referee had spoken, IBJJF President Carlos Gracie Jr went on to conccur with Lloyd's protest but again, buy statute the final word was the referee's and could not be changed.
I caught up with a disappointed Fowler shortly after the situation. Fowler stated:' I caught his arm, I heard it pop, then he slammed me but the fight continued. It is a bummer.' . . . Then suddenly the warrior spirit in him kicked in: 'Kid when is the next competition here? I am going to come back. I am going to come back here a lot! I am going to win here!' A warrior no doubt, nothing can stop him! He'll be back to Rio. He'll win his title!
Tomorrow the quarter's, semi's and the finals take place
