Jiu-Jitsu received with honors in the Emirates
Abu Dhabi Cup champions meet with leader of country
Between his obligations to the chiefs of state and authorities of countries such as Sudan and Japan, His Highness Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nayan scheduled this Monday a meeting that is becoming more and more common for the country’s sheikh and general. It is a reception, with much pride from all involved, for the country’s Jiu-Jitsu champions, which thanks to the homage from the crowned prince of Abu Dhabi, and also supreme commander of the army of the Emirates, ended up on all the TV programs and newspapers in the country the very next day. At prime time and on the front page.
Lauded by the local fighters who won medals on the 10th of May at the last Abu Dhabi Cup, many of them personal guards of the sheikh, and others members of the country’s special forces, are the teachers responsible for the success of the gentle art in the country. They are a troop of Brazilians working with Carlao Santos, who arrived in the country six years ago and began work that demanded five more black belts: Olavo Abreu, Suyan Queiroz, Ricardinho Brandao, Marcelo “Guardinha” Motta and Sid Jacintho. “Only here are Jiu-Jitsu instructors received by the leader of a country in a cerimony full of heads of state,” says 1996 Pan-American champion Ricardinho.

UAE submits bid to host 2009 and 2010 Fifa World Cup
Abu Dhabi: A delegation from the UAE Football Association (FA) has submitted the UAE's bid to host the 2009 and 2010 Fifa Club World Cup Championship to Fifa president Sepp Blatter in Zurich.
The UAE delegation, headed by its president, Mohammad Khalfan Al Rumaithi, also met Fifa officials on Thursday, including general secretary Jerome Valcke and Jim Brown, Fifa head of competitions.
"Fifa has received our bid and it does look encouraging. We have conveyed to Fifa the full support of the Government in staging the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi," said Al Rumaithi.
Another UAE FA official, Hamad Bin Brook, chairman of the Professional League Committee, said Fifa were pleased with UAE's bid to stage the prestigious Club World Cup which brings the champions from all the continental confederations.
Apart from the UAE, Japan, hosts over the last four editions, and Australia have expressed their interest in staging the event.
Decision on May 27
The Fifa executive committee will decide which country will host the 2009 and 2010 event at its meeting on May 27.
The UAE's bid stands a good chance of getting the Fifa nod as the Abu Dhabi Sports Council have roped in abold - a Germany-based brands and sports communications company.
This company has done the strategic planning and realisation from the bidding phase to implementation of major events like Germany's bid for the 2006 Fifa World Cup, South Africa's bid for the 2010 Fifa World Cup and Leipzig's bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
An abold team, supported by specialists from abold's Frankfurt-based technical partners as&p and ProProjekt, felt Abu Dhabi had the potential to win the race against its bidding competitors Japan and Australia.
In the event of the UAE winning the bid, there is every possibility of a UAE club competing with the world's best.
One club from the host nation will take on the winners of the Oceania Champions League and the winners join the champion clubs of AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), Uefa (Europe), CONMEBOL (South America) and CONCACAF (North America & others) in the championship proper.
Abu Dhabi's Zayed Sports City Stadium and the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium (Al Jazira Club's home ground) will be the venues for the matches.

Rehan earns double at jiu jitsu event
By M. Satya Narayan, Senior Reporter
Abu Dhabi: The UAE's Eid Rehan scored a double in the two-day Asian Jiu Jitsu Championship which was held over the weekend here in the capital.
Rehan, one of the UAE's top exponents of Brazilian jiu jitsu, did the country proud by winning the Absolute Class in the Open category against his Jordanian opponent.
Rehan displayed excellent skills as he forced Zayed Nayef into submission to win the feature event in the two-day championship that saw over 150 competitors from 30 countries taking part.
Rehan had earlier won the above-99kg category title with a win over another UAE fighter, Talal Awad.
Apart from Rehan the other UAE competitors who tasted success were Saif Al Nuaimi, Khalifa Al Qubaisi, Mohammad Al Menhali and Abdullah Al Ketbi.
The two-day event was held under the patronage of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Jordan's Sa'ad Alananza and Luiz Fernando, Bahrain's Mohammad Mirza and Tunisian Hassan Mousa along with Jaro Fedorisin from Slovakia also won titles in their respective categories to carry home a slice of the total prize money of $33,000 (Dh121,374) that was on offer.
The UAE emerged the overall winners with Jordan and Bahrain following them in the top three positions. Commenting on the UAE's fine display, former three-time world champion Carlos Santos said it was expected.
"We have a strong group of UAE nationals who have been training very hard. Some of them have been winners in previous events while most others have been improving all the time," said Santos, who is the coach of the UAE team.
