Abu Dhabi: Over 150 competitors including 50 from the UAE will be pitting their skills against one another in the two-day Asian Jiu Jitsu Champion ship starting here today.
The event is being held at the UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation arena and nearly 30 countries will be represented in what will be one of the biggest Jiu Jitsu events at the Asian level.
Addressing a press conference here at the Armed Forces Officers Club Lieutenant General Mohammad Hilal Al Ka'abi said the event was being held under the patronage of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Competition
"The two-day championship is the second major Jiu Jitsu championship being organised here in Abu Dhabi and prize money totalling $33,000 will be given to the winners," said Al Ka'abi, who is the Chairman of the competition. Former three-time world Jiu Jitsu champion Carlos Santos of Brazil who is the event organiser and George Bikhazi, Director General of the Armed Forces Officers Club also attended the press conference.
"While the UAE will be represented by nearly 50 fighters some of the other top Jiu Jitsu exponents will be coming from US and Brazil, who are power houses for this martial art," said Santos, who is the coach of the UAE team.
The competitors will be divided into two groups with Group A consisting of 10 divisions including under-62 kgs, under-67 kgs, under-72 kgs, under 72- kgs, under-77 kgs, under -87 kgs under -93 kgs, under -99 kgs, over-99 kgs and the absolute class.
The winner in each group will be presented with a cheque of $1,400 with the runners-up will get $600.
