Fighting talk from a young Emirati
Hassan al Rumaithi feels he is carrying the future of his sport in this country on his muscular shoulders.
The first Emirati professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter takes centre stage tonight at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Fighting Championship (ADFC) as he goes fist-to-fist with the 32-year-old Italian Massimiliano Pecchia.
Al Rumaithi is 26 and this will be only his third MMA fight – “the first big one”, he says – and while he has spent two months training twice a day, he admits to being as nervous as he is excited. “This is my first big competition and I feel a lot of pressure, yes, because I am the only local fighter and it is taking place in Abu Dhabi,” he says.
“A lot of young guys will be watching me, wanting me to win, so they can begin training too.”
MMA visibility has expanded locally of late, with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 112: Invincible event in March having provided the Middle East’s first live taste of the sport. Some 11,000 people watched the bouts at a purpose-built arena at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island. It was also beamed to millions of homes around the world. .
With a strong interest in the Emirates in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, it is little surprise that MMA, which combines stand-up fighting techniques with wrestling, jiu-jitsu and judo, is becoming popular among Emiratis.

Mohammed bin Zayed receives winners of Jiu Jitsu Championship
WAM Abu Dhabi, May 04th, 2010 (WAM)--HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, said the UAE under leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is keen to provide all types of support to the sports sector.
He added that such a role help implant noble values, fair competition and respect for others among the sports groups, who highlight the name of UAE at regional and international sports arenas.
This came during Sheikh Mohammed's reception separately of the champions of the Abu Dhabi Schools Jiu Jitsu championship and the UAE national champions who ranked second at the World Cup of Jiu Jitsu Championship for Professionals, which was held in Abu Dhabi in April.
Present were HH Sheikh Rashid bin Saud Al Mualla, Umm Al Qaiwain Crown Prince, HE Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair, the Speaker of Federal National Council, The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan and HH Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court.
Sheikh Mohammed expressed his pleasure about meeting 35 male students, 36 female students and a number of administrative staff and trainers, adding that they are young promising sports talents in this sports, urging them to continue training to represent the country in the world championships.
He also received the UAE nationals who won the second position of the world championships of Jiu Jitsu for professionals, which was held in Abu Dhabi. He praised the winners for their achievement, urging them to exert more efforts to bag more future championships.
On their part, the team expressed their happiness on meeting Sheikh Mohammed, adding that the achievement was attained due to his support.
It is worth noting that the UAE team won 11 medals, of which four were gold medals, in Jiu Jitsu Championship for professionals, which was held in Abu Dhabi from April 15-17. The team was ranked second.
For his part, HE Dr Moghair Khamis Al Khaili, director general of Abu Dhabi Education Council, commended unlimited continuous support provided by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed to students to develop their skills and talents.

Shaikh Mohammed honours jiu-jitsu winners
ABU DHABI — More than 100 male students from across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi congregated at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club to compete in the finals for the Abu Dhabi Schools Jiu-Jitsu Cup, hosted by Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC). The participants were grade 6 and 7 finalists who had won medals in the education zone competitions earlier this year.
General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of ADEC, and Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Director General of ADEC, attended the finals and honoured the 36 winners.
“We are pleased with the enthusiasm of our students and the commitment of our coaches, and we hope to expand the program to include more schools next year,” Dr. Al Khaili said. “Athletics are an important component of childhood development, and through activities like these, we encourage our students to become more well-rounded individuals.”
“The finals are designed to give students with the opportunity to show others how much they have progressed and help identify those students who may become future champions in the sport,” he added.
ADEC aims to provide a comprehensive after-school program for interested and talented Jiu-Jitsu students so that they can progress through the different belt levels.
Students fight according to nine weight divisions ranging from “roosters” and “light featherweights” weighing in at 30kg – 34 kg, to “heavy” and “super heavy weights” weighing 64 kg and above.
The competition was intense across all weight divisions. The bouts involve two minutes of high-energy physical effort, with no kicking or punching. The winner of each bout is the boy who scores the most points or forces his opponent into submission.
Dr. Al Khaili expressed his appreciation for the great support provided by General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Shaikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Adviser and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC).
The School Jiu-Jitsu programme is an initiative of General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and is under the patronage of Shaikh Zayed bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, who is a keen Jiu-Jitsu competitor.
“I was impressed with how well the finals were organized,” Dr. Al Khaili said. “The boys were focused and fought with passion. But when the winner was announced they shook hands and embraced. There were no losers today, only winners.”
Mohammed Salem Al Dhahiri, Director of School Operations, congratulated all participants on their good sportsmanship. “The coaches ensure the bouts are fair and the boys are safe. They encourage each of the contestants to do their best, and are supported by the school principals and PE teachers. Everybody works together for the good of the students.”
Many proud parents attended the finals to encourage their children. They were impressed with the organization of the finals and enjoyed the event. “My son enjoys the physical aspects of the sport, but he has been taught by the coaches to confine his energies to the two minutes of the bout and not to take them beyond this,” one father said.
Another father said: “my son tells me he needs to be fit to be successful in the sport.”

He made these remarks while attending Abu Dhabi schools open Championship in Jiu Jitsu, which was held at the internal stadium of the UAE Judo and Jiu Jitsu Federation in Abu Dhabi this morning. Chairman of the Presidential Aviation HH Sheikh Tahnoun Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was present.
Commending on the introduction of Jiu Jitsu at schools as part of the physical training, Sheikh Mohammed said that this represents a major strategic pillars of our approach for the advancement of the sports in the UAE enabling the young generation to compete regionally and internationally.
He noted that Jiu Jitsu training at the schools will build a solid foundation for the growth of the sport in the UAE and to identify gifted children who will make their participation in regional and international tournaments.

Kutbi, Calazans shine in World Pro Jiu-Jitsu CupUAE'S Faisal Al Kutbi won the Open Heavy weight championship while Brazilian Claudio Calazans emerged the absolute champion in the second World Processional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010 which concluded at the Abu Dhabi Tennis Complex in Zayed Sports City on Saturday night.
Earlier in the evening, Kutbi won the under-93 category and another prominent UAE fighter Yahya Mansoor (under 98 kgs), and Tarek Al Kutbi (under 63 kgs) added one medal each to raise their tally to four gold medals,
The event was held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Sheikh Mohamed attended the evening the finals of the competition which kick started on Thursday. Also present were Sheikh Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor and chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
Organised by the UAE Wrestling, Judo and Jiu-Jitu Federation (UAEWJJ) it has attracted around 350 competitors from 38 countries of the world, including 66 from the UAE.
Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikh Zayed Bin Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Al Khalid Al Nahyan and UAEWJJ president Mohammed Bin Thaloub distributed the prizes.
Claudio Calazans who emerged the absolute champion walked away with a cheque of $20,000.
Guam's Jonathan Tuck won the Open Lightweight championship after beating UAE' Mohamemd Nasser to second place. "It was my third appearance in Abu Dhabi and I am delighted to win the title as the competition drew some of the best fighters of the world. In my first appearance in Abu Dhabi I won the Super Cup competition in 2008 and I finished third in the inaugural World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Cup," he said.
For the first time two ladies divisions were featured including an under-63 division and an over-63 division.
In the female over-63 category, Brazilians Gabriellel Garcia, Luzias Fernandes took the first and second place respectably. Whereas in the under-63 kgs Brazilian Luanna Alzuguri and Beatriz Mesquita took the first and second place from American Hillary Williams and Brazilian Juliana Nogueira.
