ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP:

Women’s match shines in AsianKyra, Hattori stand out at the Budo-khan
With 650 participants in its first Japan incursion, the International Jiu-Jitsu Federation deemed the 2006 Asian Championship a big success. It was held last weekend at the Budo-khan Gymnasium, in Tokyo.

The main sensation of the event was the fight between Brazil’s Kyra Gracie and local fighter Keiko Hattori, which caught the attention of the over 1,000 people present at the gym on Sunday.

Kyra started out better, attempting a guard pass, but Hattori was able to regain the guard and stopped future efforts by the young Gracie, who ended up winning by advantages in what she called “a tough little fight.”

Another Brazilian, Rômulo Barral was the greatest name in the men’s black belt, winning gold as he defeated Gama Filho team’s Theodoro Canal in the absolute, and beat Tuyoshie Tani in the light-heavyweight division.

Shooto veteran Daisuke Sugie, of Alive academy, conquered the black-belt lightweight class by submitting two opponents. In the academies’ championship, gold went to Paraestra, silver to Tani Japan.

IBJJF president Carlos Gracie Jr left Japan on Tuesday impressed with the level of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.
