Our guest this week on The FightWorks Podcast is Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti, a sixth degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and the head coach of Team Alliance. Jacare was one of the very few to receive his black belt from Rolls Gracie before his untimely death in 1982. We love these opportunities on the show when we can speak with someone who can bring such exclusive experience to our listeners about the history and culture of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

BTT?

Fight inside the BTT won’t be the end of BTT

In an open letter in its official website, the Brazilian Top Team guaranteed that the team won’t finish even without some members. Check out now the open letter signed by the team leaders Bebeo Duarte, Murilo Bustamante and Zé Mário Sperry:

Open Letter:

Funded in 2000, the Brazilian Top Team always showed itself as a team of great athletes. We are nowadays one of the most respectful academies of martial arts in the world because of ages of dedication, talent and hard work of our professors and instructors.
Different from what have being discussed, the possible problems of some members of the BTT won’t disturb the job that we have been doing seriously. We already proved that even that when some athletes leave us, we wouldn’t stop our job as a team. We had before the opportunity to defend our team and to expand the BJJ techniques for all over the world several times, and we will continue doing that for a long time yet.
Now, more than never, we will prove that the speculations around the end of the BTT are only gossips, created to try to destabilized one of the biggest teams of the fight world. The team is restructuring itself and when we will have some official change, we will let you now through our official website.

When the Ultimate Fighter Is a Woman
Tuesday, Jun. 12, 2007 By ISABEL VINCENT/RIO DE JANEIRO Woman ultimate fighter Vanessa Porto spars with her coach Pedro Eglesias, June 10, 2007, Sao Paulo State, Brazil.
Vanessa Porto made her name in one of the most watched videos on Brazilian sports websites. There, Porto, 23, took on an opponent named Cristiane Cyborg, a woman much bigger and heavier than her in Vale Tudo, the pastime North Americans call Ultimate Fighting. Porto did not win that fight but she stood her ground and ended the match on her feet, becoming a legend by aggressively going the distance. Now, Ultimate Fighting is Porto's career and she one of a handful of women who are rising stars in the controversial male-dominated sport.
Porto is still a little queasy about what she is able to do. She ended a match with a woman in her own weight class with a chokehold that left the opponent in convulsions. , "I was a little worried about what I had done," she confesses. But, "in Vale Tudo, it's everyone for themselves. If it hadn't been her, it would have been me on the floor."

But in Brazil, it was the Cyborg match in November 2005 that was the defining moment in Porto's career. "Nobody could understand how Vanessa, who is much lighter, just kept going for round after round, and not only resisting but fighting back with great aggression," said Mauricio Costa, a Vale Tudo promoter who runs the B-Tough Agency in Rio de Janeiro, a world center of the sport.

Trim and muscular, Porto became national champion in her weight class. And on July 14, she will make her international debut in Los Angeles at the Fatal Femmes Fighting championship, where she will square off against other women competitors from around the world. Nevertheless, she is growing tired of her female opponents. She has offered to take on the best male Vale Tudo fighter in the country. "The rules won't permit it, of course," said Costa, adding that women have been involved in Vale Tudo since about 2003. "But she's totally serious about taking on men."

Vale Tudo, which translates as "anything goes" in Portuguese, originated among jiu-jitsu masters in Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana neighborhood, which has the largest concentration of jiu-jitsu academies in the world. Often called "cage fighting" or Ultimate Fighting in North America, fighters use a mixture of several different kinds of martial arts styles to force their opponent to "tap out" or give up. In Rio de Janeiro, matches became so brutal that fighters were often rushed to the hospital after their matches. There is now a 30-page rule book ("no hair-pulling, no eye-gouging, no biting"), and participants must submit to medical reviews before they are allowed to fight. But matches have been banned by the city of Rio de Janeiro and Carioca aficionados of Vale Tudo have to go to neighboring municipalities to watch the bouts. Still it is precisely the brutality that draws thousands of people to Vale Tudo matches in Brazil, and now in North America where Vale Tudo has been popularized by the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a Las Vegas organization, and Spike TV.

Although it has long been the domain of male fighters, Vale Tudo is increasingly attracting young women with a background in martial arts from all over the world. "Brazilian women are the best in the world today," said Daniel Otero, who is 24 and one of the world's foremost Vale Tudo fighters. Otero and others involved with the sport here believe that both Brazilian men and women have an advantage because they are often experts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which is the art of grappling on the ground developed by world-renowned fighter Helio Gracie, and popularized by his nine sons around the world. Gracie, who is 95 and still teaching in Brazil, worked with Muhammad Ali and some of the world's great fighters to help them develop their technique.

Porto has a brown belt in jiu-jitsu and every day trains in jiu-jitsu, wrestling and boxing with her coach Pedro Iglesias, a black belt jiu-jitsu master with a gothic tattoo on his forearm that reads "Jesus." "There are no other women to train with here, so I use men and it's pretty intense and rigorous," says Porto, who despite her fierce reputation in the ring is well-spoken and has a gentle manner, especially with her dog, an uncharacteristically calm pit bull named Hannah. Training takes place in the small community center in Jua, her gritty small hometown of 150,000 in the interior of Sao Paulo state. It is an all-day affair, with a few breaks for meals and rest.

Although Porto's family supports her fighting career, others in Jua, a conservative Catholic town some four hours from the city of Sao Paulo, don't quite understand why a young woman wants to get into a ring and fight so brutally. "People don't understand that I look at this as a job," she says. "I never think that I hate my opponent or that I want to kill them. I am just there to do my job, and to do it well."

JIU-JITSU AND SURF:

Jiu-Jitsu and Surf walking together

Student of Zé Marcello since white belt until black one, Yannick Beven, most known as Nick, a former professional surfer, developed a very interesting project where he combined all the experiences he had at Jiu-Jitsu to apply in Surf, and he named that Training Camps.

"Like a former professional surfer, I always searched for new components which could improve my performance into the sport and my personal live. I practiced for long time the Capoeira, later I started on the Yoga, where I stayed during 10 year with the support of a professor in Niteroi (city of Rio de Janeiro), this all with the goal of becoming a better athlete, I learned how to control my emotions." said Nick to the BTT’s official website.

The Jiu-Jitsu entered on the life of this brazilian, with high french accent by huge way, in front of the technique and the diversity of the sport, Nick saw yourself forced to leave the Surf and to dedicate himself 100% at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which he knew recently in that period.

"I competed in a lot of submission grappling and Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in Europe in tournaments of. Besides of being the interpreter of my master Zé Marcello", complete Nick.

High level competitor in Surf and being in a nice position, where he could join the experiences of the past(Surf) which the ones of nowadays (Jiu-Jitsu), Nick had a great idea in his mind and realized that the confidence, concentration and the balance that he acquired during all of his time could be used in a magic combination. About that he related us:

"I had in my hands everything that a surfer could need, inside the water I had the experience of the competitions I did, out of it the BJJ which I learned gave me an amazing support."

With the tools in hands, inside and out of the sea, Nick collaborated with the project of QuickSilver (considered surf wear) title Training Camps. Developed by the 2x World champion Tom Carrol, who nowadays works for the QuickSilver, it was great for Nick to make part of this project which had the deal of forming surf competitors such as Patrick Beven (Nick`s brother), 4º in the World ranking of WQS and who was a person who helped a lot, Miky Pilcon, top elite athlete and the prodigy, Jeremi Flores who won the WQS title this year, being the younger guy to enter in the elite of surf. At the last words, Nick leaves a final message

"I am very happy of having given this historic step into the world surf, and very happy too of making part of this two extraordinary teams, the Brazilian Top Team and the QuickSilver, thank you all".

The Camp matches the week of the World Tournament and will be a great opportunity for all members of the GB Family to get together to learn, train and have fun!
Some of the activities planned for week include training sessions coached by Master Carlos Gracie Jr. himself and other GB Black Belts, Classes at GB America, visits to the World Tournament, a breakfast with all members of the GB Family and more.

GB America is moving soon to a bigger and much nicer facility
Gracie Barra America, the GB Family's headquarter in the US, is preparing to move. The new space will be five times bigger then the current facility and therefore much more appropriate to receive every member of the GB Family for activities like GB Company's meetings, training programs for GB Instructors, Tournaments between GB Schools and more. ROYCE K1:

Kid Peligro Jiu-Jitsu News . . . K1 Dynamite Field Notes and Paparazzi Gallery
Submitted by:Kid Peligro

Kid was fortunate enough to attend the K1 Dynamite show this past Saturday at the LA Coliseum. The event will have plenty of regular coverage so here are my field notes:

- Reaching the Coliseum was nuts, the last 1/2 mile took over 30 minutes because of the horrendous traffic jam.

- Upon entering the stadium, Kid received his press credentials. With all his connections etc, he ended up as "Bob Uecker" would put it: "In the front row!" NOT, I ended up assigned Uecker type seats at the press box, up high near the sky at the Coliseum. After much threatening (and much more pleading), I was able to get a floor pass, but since I didn't have a ring photo pass, I ended up getting more paparazzi type photos than fight photos except during Royce v Sakuraba's match, when I was able to sneak by and get up closer and snag a few better shots.

- Tons of celebrities were present including U.F.C. Champion Quinton Jackson, Mega Star Nicholas Cage, Olympic Gold Medalist Mo Green, NFL star Keyshawn Johnson, Joe Rogan, Denis Rodman, K1's Ray Sefo, other fighters galore Vitor "Shaolin, Murilo "Ninja", Frank Trigg, "Crazy Horse", "Big Daddy " Goodridge, Renato "Babalu", Marcelo Garcia and many others.

- "JZ" Cavalcante has some good hands and quickly destroyed Nam Phan

- Jake Shields was in form, it will be nice to see him against tougher opposition. He's one of the tops in his class!

- Former NFL receiver Johnny Morton was laid out by a right hand and stayed down for some time. I can just imagine the headache the next day. After seeing Morton KO'ed recently retired NFL star Keyshawn Johnson stated: "That's why I don't fight!" Morton is now probably considering a position similar to Johnson in the broadcast booth : )

- Stay away from "Mighty Mo" strikes, the man has dynamite in his fists especially the right. When he connects you go down!

- The Korean fans went wild when Korean fighter Don Sik Yoon reversed the course of the action and submitted Manhoef with a clean sweep to arm-bar. During the fight their cheering and striking with the inflatable props made it look and feel like a Soccer World Cup match. Yoon also demonstrated a great ground game with his Judo. He showed that World Class Judo medals don't come to just anyone, the skills that earned him a bronze medal in the World Championships and four gold medals in the Asian Championships are transferring well to MMA with each match.

- Hideo Tokoro is a really exciting fighter, his constant movement and attacks are something to watch. His opponent Pickett has great hands, look for big results when his ground game develops further

- Sakuraba is a great fighter. I've watched him fight 2 or 3 times and he never stops impressing me with his fight demeanor. He is calm at all times in the match and he never appears to be in trouble or breathing hard. He did appear frustrated by Royce's strategy. as he looked to his corner several times with an annoyed expression. Royce's front kicks seemed to take him off his game and cause him a lot of trouble

- Royce's game plan was very good, see above. Royce's conditioning was even better. At the end of the first round he appeared completely spent, then after the one minute rest, he was back to near 100%. He seemed to be gaining strength with each round as he looked fresher going into the third round than the second. Props to his conditioning coach James Strom

- K1 Dynamite had a large attendance, unofficial word from the promoters states it around 54,000 making it the largest MMA attendance in the USA to date. I cannot imagine there were less than 30,000 in attendance. Additionally, they seem to be capturing a new sector of public that was perhaps largely ignored by other fight promotions with the Korean and Japanese community in LA coming to see their stars.

- Brock Lesnar is the real deal. His wrestling skills unpeachable, his size and strength - off the chart. If he keeps training and fighting he could reach the top of the World quickly!
