ZAYED MARATHON:
Mohammed bin Zayed receives organizers of Zayed Marathon

WAM Abu Dhabi, March 4th, 2008 (WAM) - General/ HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces received here this evening head and members of the organising committee of the Zayed International Marathon, the world's richest long distance race with total cash prizes of USD 2 million.
The race was run last Thursday at the Abu Dhabi Corniche under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs.
During the meeting, Lt. General Mohammed Hilal Suroor Al Kaabi, Chairman of the Army Officers' Club and head of the committee, introduced the committee members to Sheikh Mohammed.
Sheikh Mohammed welcomed the committee members and thanked them for their efforts to make the event a rousing success.
"The marathon achieved a great success with large number of runners taking part. This shows the love people have for the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan," he said.
He urged further effort to highlight this event internationally and attraction of more sponsors and renowned athletes to enhance the race's image.
Favourites Samuel Wanjiru of Kenya and Lorna Kiplagat of The Netherlands won the men's and women's field respectively in the marathon.
Wanjiru completed the 21-km distance in 1 hour and 33 seconds while Kiplagat scored another emphatic win with over two minutes separating her from the second-placed Debela Barhane from Ethiopia.
