UAE's Jiu-Jitsu team dazzle with 8 medals in Las Vegas

UAE'S Jiu-Jitsu team outmatched rivals with a brilliant performance in the Grapplers Quest UFC 100, held this week, at the Mandala Bay in Las Vegas.

They secured eight medals including three gold, three silver and two bronze in the competition, which attracted over 250 fighters from different parts of the world.

Among the Emirati fighters, Mohammed Nasser Al Qubaisi hogged the limelight by winning two gold medals. Faisal Al Ketbi was the other Emirati gold medalist. Ali Al Minhali took one silver and one bronze while his teammates Tariq Al Ketbi and Talib Al Kurbi settled for silver and bronze each.

Earlier the Emirates Jiu-Jitsu team took part in the Rickson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2009 held on June 28 at the Hamamatsu Arena.

The team was accompanied by the Emirates Jiu-Jitsu team head coach Brazilian Carlos Santos along with fellow Brazilians coaches Olavo Abreu and Suyan Queiroz.

This was the first time that the Emirati team participated in competitions held in Japan and America. It was a good opportunity for local talents to gain experience and compete with their peers from other countries besides promoting Abu Dhabi as the World capital of the Professional Jiu-Jitsu.

Three-time World champion Carlos praised the team for achieving good results at the competition.

Carlos thanked Mohammed Bin Thaloob, president of the UAE Wrestling, Judo and Jiu-Jitsu Federation for his support. "Through his constant encouragement we are able to achieve remarkable results," said Carlos said who was the world champion in 1996, 1998 and 2000.
