Jiu-Jitsu crown for Moosa

HASSAN Moosa of the Emirates team emerged the champion of the 3rd Emirates Cup Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu championship which concluded on Saturday at the UAE Judo and Wrestling Federation.

In the final of open weight category, Tunisian Moosa defeated his teammate Emirati Eid Rehan by two points to nil to win the title.

Earlier in the evening he overcame UAE's Swidan Al Dahri to win the -78 Kg category.

The two-day championship was held under the patronage of Sheikh Zayed Bin Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The total prize money on offer was Dhs55,000 and it featured eight categories.

Sheikh Mohammed gave away the trophies in the presence of Major General Mohammed Hilal Al Kaabi, Deputy Chief of Staff and president of the UAD Athletic Federation and Mohammed Bin Thaloob, UAE Judo and Wrestling Federation.

Moosa said the competition was bigger than the previous years as it attracted a quality field.

"The championship was a competitive one as it drew good fighters from different parts of the world," said Moosa who is the Judo coach of the Emirates team, adding that the sport was growing in the Emirates.

In the super fight, Zed Mirza of Jordan defeated Yann Chiffoleau from Bahrain and the winner walked away with $1,200 with the runner-up receiving $500.

Emiratis made a clean sweep in both the Under-92 and Under-99 weight categories with Yahya Mansour echeloning in the under-99 category.

Event manager Santos Carlos expressed his gratitude to all individuals who put in much effort in organising the event the establishments which sponsored the championship.

He said the Abu Dhabi International Jiu-Jitsu Cup will be held on May 4-5, 2007 and $20,000 will be awarded in prizes.
