RENZO GRACIE NEWS:
7/30/2007
The workshop held This past Friday at Renzo Gracie Academy was packed to the hilt with new and old students. Everyone was in good spirits and there was a forthcoming positive energy in the air as Master Renzo took the reigns of class leading the workshop with some very insightful new techniques. The big surprise came at the end of the workshops though, where many deserving students were awarded belt upgrades. The pinnacle of the night ended with the giving away of a total of eight new black belts. Usually with the award of a new belt Master Renzo ceremoniously hits the student over the back with the new belt but he held back this action respectfully joking: “You never hit a black belt!” After receiving the Black Belt each student was required to make a speech before all as they graciously tied the belt around their waist. Every speech came from the heart of each student and touched all in the room. The following is taken from some of the speeches…
“Looking back it has been a long journey.”
“If I died tomorrow I could look back on my life and this would be the pinnacle.”
“This is not the end. This is a stepping stone to many greater things.”
“It’s been a long hard road.”
“If I was hugging his (Renzo’s) leg …it was only because it was on my side of the bed.”(Pete Lawson joked in response to a story told by Renzo)
At the end, of course, everyone gave many thanks to Master Renzo.

AMERICAN WIN WORLD TITLE:
Lovato gets the gold
Oklahoma-based teacher is the second American ever to win a BJJ blackbelt World title
Rafael Lovato went down to Brazil a couple of months ago with a mission: to get experience for the World title. He did better, conquering the BJJ Nationals (he is the cover of GRACIE Magazine July issue; are you serious you did not downloaded this free sample, in the red banner on the top-right of GRACIEMAG.com?).
However, the big achievement would not be enough for him this year, as he still planned to win the most important title of JJ, the Mundials.
And, last Sunday, at Long Beach, CA, after a very even match against Luis "Big Mac", in which both fighter only got one advantage in the score, the referee awarded Lovato his so dreamed title.
Thus, he became the second American to achieve it (the first one was now-famous MMA fighter BJ Penn).
Watch the crucial parts of this historical final and listen what Lovato had to say less than a minute after his victory:

WORLD BJJ RESULTS:
Roger absolute champion
Check the results of 2007 BJJ Worlds
It was a victory of perseverance. After being runner up four times in the main category of the Jiu-Jitsu Worlds, three of which were lost in dramatic decisions, Roger Gracie finally conquered the dreamed of gold medal in the absolute. His crowning can after beating Romulo Barral, of Gracie Barra BH. With the conquest Roger became the first Gracie to be absolute black belt champion since the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship’s creation in 1996.
To reach the title, the Gracie Barra UK leader overcame Rominho with a choke from the back. Before applying the defining hold, Roger was already winning 10 to 0 after having managed to get the take down and take the back twice.
Now having qualified for his fifth absolute final in a row, Roger told GRACIEMAG.com: “This one is mine and nobody is taking it from me.” And he was right…
SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT
Guaranteed to fight in the final of the absolute, Roger Gracie (Gracie Barra) has gained even more morale by beating Robert Drysdale (Brasa) in the super heavyweight decision, thus becoming the five-time world champion in the category. He won the gold with a choke from the back when Roger would have won anyway from a reversal.
MEDIUM HEAVYWEIGHT
Roger’s adversary in the absolute final, Romulo Barral showed he is still on top and stopped Saulo Ribeiro (Gracie Humaita) from taking the highest spot on the winner’s podium for the seventh time in his career. The triumph cam with two sweeps and a takedown, and the final score was 6 to 0 for the Vinicius Draculino student in Gracie Barra BH.
ROOSTER
The surprise Japanese black belt, Yusuke Honma could not hold out against the best game of the Brazilian Bruno Malfacine and ended up submitted by the UGF fighter when he was already losing by 12 to 2. Honma thus missed his chance to achieve the same feat of BJ Penn, featherweight champion in 2000, in becoming the first non-Brazilian to take gold as a black belt.
SUPER FEATHERWEIGHT
The super featherweight saw the crowning of one of the greatest winners in the history of the Worlds. Champion in 1997/98/99 and 2000, Robson Moura defeated Samuel Cruz (Gracie Barra) by 4 to 2 advantage points, thus adding another gold medal to his impressive collection.
FEATHERWEIGHT
Rubens "Cobrinha" Charles defended the title he won last year with style. With a choke from the back the athlete from Alliance submitted Mario Reis (Gracie Barra). Before applying the final blow, Cobrinha was already winning by 3 to 0 from having managed to pass the guard.
HEAVYWEIGHT
Missing the opportunity to win his second absolute title did not shake Xande Ribeiro. With determination, the Gracie Humaita black belt took down and passed the guard of Roberto Tussa, to then submit the Gracie Barra representative with a choke from the mount.
SUPER SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT
If the Japanese fighter Honma was unable to repeat the feat of BJ Penn, the same can not be said about Rafael Lovato Jr. The Gracie Humaita black belt, and native of Oklahoma City defeated Luiz “Big Mac” Theodoro in a breathtaking final. This was because with the score tied, the American was losing on advantages till the final seconds of the fight. However, his determination prevailed and Lovato managed to come up with the necessary advantage, bringing the crowd present in the gymnasium to its feet.

KRON BROWN NUMBER 1:
Before the victory, instructions and massage.
Kron brown champion
Rickson:’He was already a black belt and nobody knew’
The plan worked out. After not showing up to fight in the brown belt absolute, Kron Gracie went into the fight for the middleweight gold full of fire: "I didn't want to hurt myself fighting heavier guys," said Kron to the GRACIEMAG.com camera, already with the gold medal hanging from his neck. The new accessory came after the sweet choke he applied to the absolute champion, Otavio Sousa.
The win, however, would not come easy. Kron started off behind on the score cards and a takedown almost took him out of the fight: "My arm got trapped in the middle of my gi and I fell on my neck. I felt the reverberations along my whole spine."
Beside his son, after a teary embrace, Rickson Gracie revealed just how close his son is to being a black belt: "Closer than you would think. In fact, he needs to learn to fight in the black belt now, where he will face older and more experienced guys," said a father unable to hide his pride.

KID ++++ NEWS:
Kid Peligro Jiu-Jitsu News . . . 2007 Worlds Quick report Its Roger Gracie v Romulo Barral for the Absolute and Kron Gracie submits 5 on his way to the gold
After along day in the 2007 Worlds the big news is that "Xande" Ribeiro won't be defending his Absolute title this year as he lost to Romulo Barral in the semi's by 2 advantages to 0. Roger Gracie dominated his side of the bracket by submitting most of his opponents and having the "fight of the event" so far with Fernando "Margarida" in the quarters. After a quick takedown Roger awas up 2 x 0 when Margarida returned the favor with a takedown and a pass for a 5 x 2 lead plus 2 advantages. With 3 minutes to go MArgarida had the score and side control with the lapel under the head control. Roger's dad Mauricao Gomes was watching another nightmare in the making, when suddenly Roger exploded off the bottom, escaped the control and reversed all in one motion! Now it was 5 x 4 with still 2 ads for Margarida. Roger then processed to pass Margarida's guard at least a couple more times and secure the win convincingly. After the win Roger faced Roger Drysdale in the semis and submitted him to reach the finals.
Kron Gracie submitted all five of his opponents including Absolute winner Otavio Souza in the finals to win the Brown middle weight. An emotional Kron kissed the inside of his Gi (where the picture of his late brother Rockson is permanently printed) dedicating the win to him. After the fight, proud papa Rickson hugged Kron for a very emotion filled moment. When asked if Kron was ready to be graduted Rickson was quick to oint out: "We have to look into that but he still can learn a lot ."
