Check out a list of the countries represented at the event
For the first time a Middle Eastern team will participate in the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship. The Jordanian team, led by brown belt Zaid Mirza, has already embarked on the trip to Los Angeles where they will compete in the event from the 23rd to 26th of August in the California State University Long Beach gymnasium.
Zaid Abu Soud (two-time Abu Dhabi champion), Mohammed Mirza (three-time champion of Emirates Cup and Abu Dhabi) and Zaid Shuqman wil fight for medals as blue belts. In the brown belt middleweight, Zaid Mirza, student of Cassio Werneck, will try to reach the podium for the first time.
Another star to represent Jordan will be Jonatas "Tagarela" Gurgel (World and Brazilian champion), who has lived in Jordan for two months. "Training here in Jordan is getting tougher and tougher - mainly now with the arrival of the high level black belts. It was a shame that Pedro Galiza (Jordan Team) had visa problems, but that was all settled and God willing he will still be able to accompany the team," revealed Zaid Mirza, who leads the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Jordan.
