UAE take jiu jitsu honours in open sports festival

Abu Dhabi: The UAE's national team emerged overall champions in the Jiu Jitsu competition of the 12th Armed Forces Officers Club's Ramadan Open Sports Festival.

The UAE topped with Jordan coming second and Bahrain finishing third as over 150 competitors from 30 countries took part in six weight categories, according to a press release.

In the individual contests, Eid Rehan of the UAE emerged champion in the above-92 kg category after defeating Egypt's Tariq Mattar.

Demetrius of Greece completed a double when he won the 92-kg category when he defeated Taimur Islam of Britain.

Demetrius later won the open category after he defeated Russia's Hakeem Raimov in the final with Ivos Noel of the US finishing third.

Cash prizes
Jordan's Mohammad Balbis, won the 83-kg event while the gold in the 74-kg event went to Abdullah Al Shaikh of Bahrain. Bahrain's Sena Manfred won the gold in the 65kg event.

International Jiu Jitsu coach Carlos Santos said: "The Asian Cup Jiu-Jitsu championship has been slated for December 12 and 13 at the Armed Forces Officers Club.

"The championship will be held in collaboration with the UAE Wrestling and Judo Association. Total cash prizes of $38,000 will be up for grabs at the end of the championship," he added.
