Wire from Reuters:

It takes three elements to perform well in competitions: solid technical skill, good physical conditioning, and a desire to win; and the Saudi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team seems to have all three. "We have a good team, a good spirit, and basically all the elements needed to do very well in the next Abu Dhabi BJJ competition," commented Sameer Al-Zahrani, coach of Khobar Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy ( http://www.saudibjj.com).

"We are certain the next competition in Abu Dhabi will be great and successful like its predecessors. We certainly thank Coach Carlos Santos for bringing that level of healthy competition the region. And we wish good luck and success to all participating teams," added Mr. Al-Zahrani.

PRIDE 33:

PRIDE RESULTS

A Night of Electrifying Upsets Signals Pride’s “Second Coming”
By Steven Marrocco

Saturday, February 24, Las Vegas- For all the promotional hyperbole that comes along with the exploding sport of MMA, the competition for fans hard-earned money, and rivalry between companies, Pride 33 proved once again that the quality of fights is the bottom line in success.

From top to bottom, the talent-laden card delivered, but the real story of the night was the performance of Pride’s co-stars, billed second fiddle to the marquee stars of the organization. Not in recent memory have so many of an organization’s cornerstone fighters been upset in one night.

Though Pride was still shy of selling out the Thomas and Mack Center , over 13,000 fans attended the evening, besting their last showing by around a thousand fans.

President Nobuhiku Sakikibara sidestepped questions of Pride’s proposed sale, responding to a request for the confirmation of a pending deal with a “maybe”. “They have to get in line,” Sakikibara followed. “I have two children…Pride is my third child.”

The imaginative scenario of a dual title-holder became reality, as Pride Welterweight Champion took the Middleweight belt from champion Wanderlei Silva in a dominating performance. After catching one of Wanderlei’s wild left hooks, Henderson rebounded early to dish out some punishment of his own on his feet before taking Silva to the ground and pounding him for the remainder of the first.

“I got a little bit of a slow start, but after that I felt great,” Henderson said shortly before being taken to the hospital for a broken hand. “None of his punches were really affecting me. I came out smiling, and I was thinking, next time I’m going to hit him harder.”

The new champ followed through on his promise, catching Silva with a vicious right that sent him staggering back midway through the second. The two traded punches as Henderson moved to capitalize, but a left hook had goodbye written all over it, slamming into Silva’s jaw and sending him hurtling straight to the canvas. The ref jumped to save Silva at 2:08 of the second round.

CLIMBING ARMLOCK:

Climbing Armlock
“Look for the version of the move that you adapt the best to.” This is the hint Master Osvaldo Alves gives you

The red-and-black belt teaches that, when a moves limitations become apparent, always try to perfect it. When inspired, he says he even ends up creating new moves: "I was the one that invented the wrist-lock," he tells us.

The climbing arm-lock is another position claims to be his own: "Around the 1970's, you could see the training sessions of two of my best students, Peixotinho and Sérgio Penha. They would sink several arm-locks from the guard, but never could get the submission.

That was where I came up with the idea of not crossing the feet to perform the arm lock,” he recalls. “When my students started attacking with the closed guard in the championships, their adversaries had a tough time escaping," says Master Osvaldo with pride, which brings us to the trick of this arm bar: "Don't worry so much about the opponent's arm. What is important is that you control his shoulder. To do that, use your calf."

ADCC NEWS:

ADCC 2007 - 7th Submission Fighting World Championships
Submitted by: Kid Peligro

May 4th, 5th and 6th, 2007
Sovereign Bank Arena, Trenton, NJ

With the main event approaching the level of interest is greatly rising and a lot of confusion and misinformation about the process of entering the event is floating around. First, competing in any event other than the ADCC trials does not guarantee entry into the main event. No organization is favored, all competition results are treated equally!

Second, there is no fast track to entering the ADCC and no one other than the ADCC Committee through Guy Neivens, can confirm or guarantee your entry into the main event. So it pays to remind everyone that there are only two ways to enter the event:

HOW TO APPLY?

The best way to enter the competition is to win one of the regional Trial competitions that are scheduled. There are only 4 trials left: Brazil, Europe Finals, Japan and Australia. The champions from the 2005 competition are also invited back.

Accomplished martial artists should apply directly for entry. To apply directly, send a complete resume to ADCC Coordinator Guy Neivens at thecohiba@yahoo.com.

For the women's divisions send a complete resume to the ADCC's North American Spokesperson Miguel Iturrate at itur_miguel@yahoo.com.

Marcelo Garcia at full force
Two-time ADCC champion shows what is in store for his adversaries

By Luca Atalla, from New Jersey

Into the rubbish bin of history goes the story of Marcelo Garcia being out of shape. That is the conclusion the current ADCC under 76kg two-time champion delivered to critics this Saturday, when he disputed a special four man tournament, in the Wayne, New Jersey edition of Grapplers Quest.

Moving as nimbly a cat, the Alliance instructor now living in New York quickly disposed of Marcos Avellan (photo above) with - guess what - a choke from the back, and in the final defeated Gregor Gracie, after opening a 22-point lead and, a few seconds from the end, obliging his opponent to give up, as he fell victim to a choke from the north-south position (photo below).

Still eight kilos over the weight he will need to reach to defend his title at ADCC, in May, and focusing (for six months, since last Thursday) on the classes he teaches at the gym in New York, Marcelinho barely beat Rominho Barral, at the Lutacasada event, on the 27th of January.

"Rominho has long legs, he closed his guard and made it hard for Marcelinho to move," justified the fighter's wife, Tatiana Tognini. "But they thought he was out of shape and we confirmed that. Let them think that," joked Tati, who was relieved with the end of Saturday's event. "Gregor is very good," she attested. Marcelinho agreed with a nod, and he analysed: "He is exactly what they say he is, dangerous."

Gregor, who would feel the pressure minutes before the takedowns, passes of the guard, mounts, was in agreement with his brothers: "The guy really is tough, he moves impressively," That opinion, not without foundation, was no different from that of everyone else in the recreational center of William Patterson University. Or from anyone else that has ever seen the Alliance star fight.

As an extra observation, Marcelinho 2007 comes with an accessory: a well refined standing game. This novelty will complicate the life of adversaries hoping to interrupt the phenomenon's trajectory to the threpeat of the under 76kg ADCC title.

To reach the final, Gregor earned advantages to get past the veteran Leonardo Dalla (photo below), who, despite his rib popping out, at the final celebrated the fact that he had lost nearly 35lbs to fight: "I needed an objective to get into shape... I just didn't manage to complete my plan, which was to at least win the first fight and put on a good fight against Marcelinho. And then, who knows, maybe be invited to ADCC. Now all that is left, if I can recover from this injury, is to dispute the European qualifiers," thought the instructor living in Virginia out loud, referring to the fact that he has Italian citizenship.

However, he should have combined this with Gregor, who, moving beautifully in the beginning of the fight, took his back standing, and went for his neck. Léo needed his technique and lots of patience to escape. But, after that playing from the bottom, he was not able to use the rest of the fight to reverse the setback advantage.

TATAME MAGAZINE 132:

CBS News

Weighing 41.5 kilograms at the age of three, Dzhambulat Khatokhov is the heaviest and strongest child in the world. A fact confirmed by a certificate and medal from the "Guinness Book of World Records".

The mother of the sensational child, Nelya Kabardokova, took her son to the medical examination in Moscow where the child was reported to be in excellent health.

Dzhambulat quickly captured the attention of the capital city and central TV channels. The Moscow champions of Sumo dreamed to secure this treasure among their members. When Nelya returned to Terek, journalists from the Czech Republic were inquiring about the young world record holder.

Dzhambik, as he is affectionately called, was an ordinary child the first month of his life, but the next months he began to grow and gain weight, literally with every hour. "I fed him and brought him up just like my two elder sons, and I do not know why he became so different?, says the mother of the hero. "At one years old he weighted 17 kilograms. They say that the cousin of my father was characterized by enormous size and unusual strength too."

Five baby carriages were broken under the weight of this little man, until friends of the family made an extra-heavy iron construction on the wheels specifically for him. Nelya Kabardokova asserts that Dzhambik is ahead of his contemporaries not only physicaly, but also in mental and the spiritual development. She says that he demonstrates cleverness and independence beyond his years.

Elder brothers of Dzhambot took him to their sport training sessions. He quickly attracted the attention of the coach Anatoliy Buzdov, under whose management this young heavy athlete established his first record, raising a 25 kilogram rod. Nelya says that her son has long been inclined toward raising heavy things. Hardly after learning how to walk, Dzhambik raised a bucket full of water, with which his mother used to wash the floor. Very often this strong little man has impulses to lift his mom off the ground. At the sport competition where the athletes of the Terek region were honored, Dzhambulat Khatokhov became the main event. He entered the stage under the wild delight of spectators and did not disappoint as he lifted two heavy weights.
