EMIRATES TAKE GULF CUP 2007:

Glorious moment: Shaikh Khalifa presents the Gulf Cup
trophy to the UAE team in the presence of Yemeni President
Ali Abdullah Saleh in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
Esmail Mattar scored the match-winner in the 73rd minute

Mattar lights up UAE skies
By Yasir Abbasher, Staff Reporter

Abu Dhabi: The UAE rewrote the Gulf Cup history by winning the 18th edition of the premier regional tournament, after beating Oman through a solitary goal scored by Esmail Mattar.

The winner came in the 72nd minute at Zayed Sports City Stadium on Tuesday following a goalless first half.

The UAE were the better side for the most part of the match after both teams opted a cautious 4:5:1 formation to secure domination of the midfield.

The hosts, cheered by more than 50,000 enthusiastic supporters, started the match with Majid Nasir in goal. Adil Abdul Aziz, Basheer Saeed, Rashid Abdul Rahman and Hayder Allo Ali in defence.

Hilal Saeed, Abdul Rahim Jumaa, Salem Khamis, and Subait Khater in midfield, while Mattar operated directly in front of them and behind the lone striker Mohammad Omar.

Mattar and Khamis were assisting Omar in attack, and the three combined well to make too many forays into the Omani defence.

Abdul Rahim could have scored the first goal in the 17th minute when he received the pass from Mattar. After going into the penalty area, he crossed the ball instead of shooting into the net, only for the defenders to clear for a corner.

Abdul Rahim moved in from the right flank and crossed from near the flag, a diving header from Mattar was well saved by Ali Al Habsi, the Oman custodian, 31 minutes into the match.

Adil Abdul Aziz was injured in the last minute of the first half following a tough tackle from Khalifa Ayel, Oman's libero.

Bruno Metsu, the head coach of the UAE, replaced Ayel with Saleh Obaid in the second half.

Oman striker Emad Al Housni started the second half with a first time shot that flew over the UAE's bar, one minute on resumption.

Three minutes later, the UAE made a prompt reply when Subait sent a free kick high to Basheer, whose header rebounded off the upleft.

Oman midfielder Fawzi Basheer missed a golden chance in the 65th minute, following a cross from Hassan Mudhaffar. Basheer's first time shot was deflected by Majid for a corner.

Khalid Darwish replaced a tiring Khamis and Metsu brought in Mohammad Surour in place of Omar in the 67th minute to strengthen his attack.

In the 71st minute, Mattar had the misfortune of seeing his shot, off an Obaid cross, getting deflected by the upleft. But a minute later the outstanding striker made amends and helped his country realise a long-cherished dream.

After receiving a long pass from Abdul Rahim, Mattar went on to beat Al Habsi for the all important goal.

Oman exerted pressure and tried to level the scores, but the UAE defenders kept them at bay until the end.

Pé de Pano and Marcelo Garcia win
This Saturday night, the first edition of LutaCasada.com was held. Around two thousand people were present at the event that took place in the Ribalta concert hall, in Barra da Tijuca. The organizers promised two more editions this year and a GP with the winners of each edition.

Despite the new rule determining that in the second five-minute round points would not be counted and the athletes could only submit there opponents, none of the advantages attained in the first ten minute round was reverted. Two fighters submitted their opponents, but both ended in the first round. The lightweight Tiago Alves defeated Alexandre "Pulga" Pimentel with a choke and Hannette Quadros beat Leticia Ribeiro with a kneebar.

The standout participation came from Marcelinho Garcia, who came from New York only to fight at LutaCasada.com. The black belt defeated Rômulo Barral by two to zero and recognized that his was not at his best and normal weight: “I fought at 84 kilos, but at ADCC I will again be at 77 kilos.” Marcio Pé de Pano ended the evening with a two to zero win over the also two-time champion Rodrigo Comprido. Pé said he liked the new rule: “It's good, if you get an advantage you can go for the finish in the second.”

ABSOLUTE CHAMP:

Bráulio sets up sweep on Xande, photo: Luca Atalla

The man from Pernambuco takes European title at Xande's expense

Lisbon, Portugal, 4:45 pm. With an extremely offensive guard, the man from Pernambuco, Bráulio Estima, has just beaten Xande Ribeiro and takes the openweight title at the fourth European Jiu-Jitsu championship, which is taking place at the Casal Vistoso Pavillion this weekend.

The decision started with the two athletes circling and feinting for the first grip. Bráulio got a grip first and immediately pulled guard, from where, with an outside hook, sought to throw Xande off balance. And he already had an advantage when he executed a precision move. Xande, upon hitting the ground, twisted his knee, and the fight was interrupted for a few minutes, for medical attention. But Bráulio was ahead 2 to 0 on the score card.

In the second part of the confrontation, Bráulio again looked to sweep. The two went out of the fight area and stood up, after which, quickly, Xande tried to pull guard. But the man from Pernambuco living in Birmingham, in England, showed great agility in jumping over the legs and obliging the world champion to go to all four. Immediately, he took the chance to jump into closed guard, from where he tried for several choke attempts. Xande, looking unhappy, carried on fighting, but did not react threateningly, and, after ten minutes, victory was Bráulio's, who thus enters the list of absolute Jiu-Jitsu champions.

"Finally!" exclaimed the winner, who was happy with his tactics working out. "Everything went as planned, I managed to apply everything I had thought of for this fight," said Bráulio, minutes after winning.

Everybody was silent and then Xande pointed to Braulio and looked to the audience, and then started the applause by himself clapping. Xande then left the ring, with his head lowered, and went straight to the doctors, for another examination of his right knee and a painkiller. The second place winner lamented: "I wanted to take advantage of his being off balance to come back passing his guard. But I was too confident in my flexibility."

The path to the final

The semi-finals began with a victory for Bráulio Estima, over Rafael Lovato, at 3 min 07 seconds, with a triangle from the back. Xande took a little longer to get to a decision, as he beat Lúcio Lagarto by two points with a sweep, after ten minutes.

Previously, Bráulio had submitted Vanderson Gomes with an armbar, and Fernanco Soluço with a choke from the back. On the other end of the bracket, Xande choked Felipe Dias and Yan Cabral.

Kid Peligro Jiu-Jitsu News . . . 'O Globo' and BJJ - Emirates BJJ and more
Submitted by: Kid Peligro

After many many years of only reporting hte negative side of Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilians Top National newspaper O Globo did a very positive story on the work of Brasa team instructor's Rodrigo 'Comprido', Felipe Costa & Michelle Matta's work with the blind community in Rio. The Brasa trio has been voluteering their time to conduct a class especially designed for the blind. The class is such a big success that it not only attracted the attention of the newspaper but it also boasts a waiting list' of students wanting to participate.

Congratulations !!!

Carlao Santos and Stirling University Connect

Black Belt Carlao Santos never ends with his quest to expand BJJ around the World, his latest effort is linking Stirling University and members Dr Anne Stokes and Phil Leeke with Carlos and Suyan of the Emirates bjj team.

Anne will provide a letter making Carlos Santos an official representative of Stirling University. Below are links to show the wonderful facilities of Stirling University! Stirling is a Centre of Excellence for sport and the Scottish Institute for sports is located on their campus.

Another possibility as well as the football and golf is that in the future they'll consider giving students both an educational programme and a jiu jitsu training camp throughout the summer. With the combined attraction of a beautiful Scottish University and the reputation of BTT/BK members Calrao is on to a winner.

Interview with Marcelo Alonso:
Who were some of your notable students and training partners?

“Carlson’s academy had some of the best competitors in jiu-jitsu: Mario Sperry, Murilio Bustamante, Wallid Ismail, Vitor Belfort and Allan Goes from Brazilian top Team. I promoted Marcus De Matta and gave Renato Tavares his black belt, both from American Top Team. Junior and I helped prepare Amaury Bitetti to win the 1996 World Championships. I also I taught Leo D Llha, Paulao Leite Filho, Carlao Santos, Olavo, and many others.” After I left Brazil to come to America most of the guys split and many of my old students started to create the new generation of jiu-jitsu competitors.

"He is my hero in one sense. Me and my mother used to watch him on the TV and we were always excited about his fights because you never knew what to expect."
