Sao Paulo: David Beckham will open a first in Brazil, a 'David Beckham World of Sport,' a professional sports complex designed and planned with his input.

The complex - including eight soccer fields, a 10,000-seat stadium and facilities for golf and tennis among others - will be in a soon-to-be-built luxury resort near the northeastern city of Natal, according to a statement by the Cabo Sao Roque resort on Tuesday.

Beckham, who was in Brazil for the announcement, said the facility will incorporate a scholarship programme for Brazilian children that will actively outreach to schools in the region, and that the training facilities will be able to accommodate visiting soccer teams and other sports such as American football

JORDAN EURO NEWS:

An impressive finish for the Jordanian national team at the Europeans.

The first Middle East team to compete in the European Brazilian Jiu-jitu Tournament will be flying home with smiles on the face of 4 of thier team members. With only 6 competitors, the Jordanian team obtained 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. "An extraordinary achievment for a team that has been training only Six months", explains Black Belt Zaid Mirza, who happens to be a Jordanian Armed Forces Consultant. "We are very glad that our athletes performed so well. This will give them a great boost of motivation to train harder and continue to compete in all major tournaments. Our goal is to turn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into the number one fighting art in the Middle East", delivers Mirza.

The Jordanian Delegation accompanied by Jordan Armed Forces, General Mohammed Noor Miqdadi, also exchanged souvenirs with the organizers of the event awarding them with presents given from the Jordanian Armed Forces. They were handed to Mr. Marcelo Araujo (Director of IBJJF), Mr. Augusto Alvez da Silva (President of Portuguese BJJ Federation), and Master Alvaro Mansur (Director of Referreeing). A souvenir from JAF was also handed by Mr. Mirza to current Absolute World Champion Roger Gracie, recognizing his hard work and efforts as the number one BJJ fighter in the World.

EURO RESULTS:

Alexandre Souza defeates Big Mac in absolute final
Souza wins absolute title by advantage after 2 - 2 score

By defeating Luis “Big Mac” Teodoro in the final of the absolute black belt division by 1 advantage point after a score of 2 to 2, Alexandre Souza, black belt from Gracie Floripa, was made the big name of the 2008 European Jiu-Jitsu Championship, which took place in the Casal Vistoso Sports Complex, in Lisbon, Portugal.

Before triumphing in the most prestigious category of the competition, Alexandre had already conquered the title among medium heavyweight athletes.

In the featherweight division, Reinaldo Ribeiro (Brasa) submitted Anderson Silva (Alliance) in under a minute with a foot lock.

Among middleweights, Alexandre Souza (Gracie Floripa) ended up champion by W.O., as the other finalist Ricardo Oliveira (NCT Swiss), with an arm injury, was unable to carry on in the dispute.

With the occurrence, Alexandre benefits for being better rested in his absolute final match against Luis Felipe “Big Mac” Teodoro.

Big Mac, on his part, is bringing it all on, though. The Godoi JJ black belt took the gold of the super super-heavyweight category by overcoming Marcio Corleta by 4 to 2.

Among the roosterweights, Wekcilley Lima (Swiss Morges Team) submitted Pablo Teixeira (Brazilian Fight) by choke and went to the top of the podium.

Another Brazilian battle took place among super featherweights. Felipe Costa (Brasa) defeated Bernardo Pitel (Nova Uniao) by advantages and took first place.

In the lightweight category there was no final. Michel Maia and Eduardo Pessoa, the former from Sul JJ and latter from Nova Uniao, opted to “shut out” the weight group alleging to train together all the time. With the decision, the gold went to Maia, who had his arm raised by the referee.

One of the standouts of the competition, Alan do Nascimento (Brasa) confirmed his good phase by defeating Otavio Souza (Gracie Barra) in the middleweight final. To reach the decision, Alan went past Victor Estima (Gracie Barra) by 2 to 0 in the fight that was considered the best of the event.

In the heavyweight final, Valdir Araujo de Lima Jr. (Osvaldo Alves) defeated Renato Tavares de Moraes (Frontline) by 4 to 0. To reporter Raphael Nogueira, present in the gymnasium, Valdir asked to be identified by the nickname Bebe Monstro. Request answered. Return to this page shortly for further information on the JJ European Championship.

Closing out the weight disputes and before the absolute, Marcel Fortuna (Gracie Floripa) overcame Hakim Gouram (BJJ Belgium) by 7 to 0 and took the gold among super heavyweights.

Alexandre Souza won the absolute final against Luis Felipe "Big Mac" Teodoro by advantage point with score of 2 to 2.

BJJ ??

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu began with Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese expert judoka and member of the Kodokan. Maeda emigrated to Brazil in the 1910s where an influential businessman named Gastão Gracie helped him get established. In return for his aid, Maeda taught the fighting art to Gastão's son Carlos Gracie, who then taught the art to his sons. When Maeda taught the art to the Gracies he called it Jiu-jitsu. The Gracie family refined this art form into what is now known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

What makes BJJ different from other martial arts?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts in that it provides solutions for all possible stages of combat. Other disciplines like Tae Kwon Do or Karate focus on striking and rely on a person's strength and speed to deliver damage, but speed and strength doesn't matter when you're on your back. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts fundamentally. While other martial arts rely heavily on strength and speed, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on superior technique and leverage.

What's a Gi?

A Gi (sometimes referred to as Kimono) is the uniform that is typically worn when training Jiu-Jitsu. It consists of 3 pieces: a jacket (or top), pants, and a belt. The material in which the three pieces are made is specially reinforced to withstand the rigors of daily practice. Many Jiu-Jitsu players regard their Gi in the same way a knight would their armor. Most practitioners of Jiu-Jitsu who advocate the usage of the Gi cite the more technical aspect of grappling with a Gi.

Stage set for Zayed International marathon
By Our Sports Reporter

ABU DHABI - The Zayed International marathon has been boosted by prize money of $2 million to draw the world’s leading long distance runners.

The event under the patronage of Shaikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs, and organised by the Armed Forces Officers Club will be staged in Abu Dhabi on February 28.

“We have sent invitations to some of the best known distance runners including the current world record holder and winner of the Dubai marathon Haile Gebrselassie,” said Major General Mohammed Hilal Al Kaabi, deputy chief of staff and chairman and president of the UAE Athletics Federation.

The organisers of the event have left no stones unturned to make the Zayed International marathon a world class one.

“We’ll try to bring it to the levels of leading marathons like the New York, Boston and Tokyo marathons,” said Al Kaabi. “They have a long history but we’ll try to match them with lucrative prize money. Such things don’t happen overnight at least those marathons are the bench marks of our goal.”

Apart from runners from abroad a number of national and expatriates runners will take part in one of the richest marathon events, which will be flagged off from the Armed Forces Officers Club premises and finish at the Emirates Palace.

The organiser are expecting to draw more than 15,000 runners in various categories that include events for men and women open, school children, veterans and the disabled.

INTERVIEW:

A warrior in Abu Dhabi
Carlao Santos speaks about challenges in Middle East
Carlao Santos does not rest. Living in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, the black belt works tirelessly not just to pass on his knowledge but also to popularize the practice of Jiu-Jitsu in the Middle East. And one of his roles is as organizer of championships. The next mission is to make the 2008 Abu Dhabi Cup, a competition set for the 9th and 10th of May, and which will offer a total of US$ 33,000 in prizes, a success.

What are your hopes for the Abu Dhabi International JJ Cup?

My hopes are for the event to be the biggest of all times here in the Middle East. We hope a lot of Brazilians will come, as the prize-money is great, perhaps the greatest distribution of cash prizes in Jiu-Jitsu history. At white and blue belts the champion will take home US$ 1,400 and second place US$600. At purple and brown it will be US$ 2,000 for the winner and US$ 600 for second place, for a total of US$ 33,000 in prizes, at an event that cost a total of 100,000 dollars, including staff, marketing, etc. We don’t yet have a black belt competition, but who knows maybe in the near future we will have one.

What is your assessment of JJ in the United Arab Emirates right now?

Very good. Not only in the Arab Emirates but in the whole region, thanks to my work Jiu-Jitsu is growing nicely in other countries like Jordon, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

What are the greatest challenges you face as a teacher there?

My greatest challenge is that the culture here is not one of practicing sport. Most of my students are over 26 years old. The younger ones are studying abroad. So I don’t have a youth team. But it seems that as the country is growing so much and building good schools, the youth will stick around here, so we will have children and adolescents training.

Do you foresee a representative of the Emirates shining at black belt at the Worlds?

Yes. That is not for now, though, but 5 years from now. I’m planting the seeds to later reap the fruit.

How much longer do you plan on staying around there?

I plan to stay here for many years yet. I am very well known around here for my sport, they are holding me in the necessary regard and I will be able to do a lot for Jiu-Jitsu around these parts. Who knows maybe it will become like surfing or skating, with its own world circuit. Sheikh Mohamad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (crowned prince of the United Arab Emirates) loves our sport and wants to help me with this project, which besides helping the sport, would bring the country to greater attention of the world and through sport, which is such a healthy practice.

How is GRACIE Magazine being received in the Emirates?

Well. But it’s still a novelty to them. There are many here with direct sub scri ptions, but even so they always ask me for them, every time I arrive they always ask me where the magazines are? Are they here yet?

NO GI EMIRATES:
