PAN 2007 FROM GRACIE MAG:

FROM GRACIE MAGAZINE
Pan: Barral, Humphreys shine

Blackbelt wrapped up a giant Jiu-Jitsu party
Carson, California. After an emotional 6 to 6 score in the final of the absolute category, two advantages in favor of Rômulo Barral handed the first-ever absolute category gold medal to the the Gracie Barra fighter, yesterday, over the also-young Tarsis Humphreys. The man from Alliance went to the final after submitting Flávio Almeida, Cachorrinho, with a choke. Barral would beat Rafael Lovato Jr. by points. Rominho and Tarsis faced off in the middleweight division as well, with the student of Draculino winning by advantages (2 to 2 in points).

Among those that stood out the most on the final day of the Pan, in Califórnia, Marcelinho Garcia confirmed what most had expected as he submitted Edson Diniz and took the middleweight title. Robinho Moura took Nova União to the podium in the featherweight division after beating the Japanese Daí Yoshioka by five advantages, while Rubens Charles, Cobrinha, and Mário Reis set the gymnasium on fire by swapping sweeps and the 2 to 2 score, with 2 advantages for Cobrinha to Reis's 1, in an excellent featherweight category that included a great performance from the veteran Megaton. Lucas Gomes, Brasa’s prodigal-son, confirmed that he is having a good phase by rallying back from 2 to 6 down to winning by 7 to 6, in a splendid fight with Rafael Formiga.

In the super-heavyweight category, Lovato was the big name to catch Cristiano Titi in a triangle, while Eduardo Telles swept Flávio Cachorrinho with one left on the clock and took the heavyweight title. In the Master division, Saulo Ribeiro had a beautiful victory over Cássio Werneck at the middleweight division, and there was much jubilation as Jake McVicker overcame Alexandre Sova in the final of the lightweight category. After a controversial loss to Roberto Godóoi in the heavyweight, Léo Dalla came back and won the absolute over 30 years beating Régis Lebre at the final.

Keeping up their recent routine of taking the winners podium in US tournaments, the cousins Kron and Kayron Gracie dominated at middleweight - in brown and purple belt respectively. Rickson’s son submitted all four of his opponents and Kayron, Carlos Gracie Jr.’s son, only did not submit one of the five athletes he faced. Kayron also won, two days before, his category without a gi.
