No Holds Barred: Renzo Gracie On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once againspeaks with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts legend RenzoGracie (http://renzogracie.com/ ). We spoke Tuesday afternoon at the Renzo Gracie Academy New York Cityabout his most recent mixed martial arts fight, at UFC 112 on April10, 2010, in Abu Dhabi, against Matt Hughes. We discussed some of hisgreatest and most memorable fights, including his 1995 World CombatChampionship tournament win, his 1996 victory over Oleg Taktarov, andhis 2000 loss to Kazushi Sakuraba. He explained why "grappling is thebackbone of MMA" and the key role played by leading figures in AbuDhabi in helping both grappling and mixed martial arts. He commentedon how he misses the now-defunct International Fight League (IFL). Healso argued that New York should finally sanction mixed martial artsand provide more opportunities for the people in New York, includingthe youth. We also discussed the Renzo Gracie Open No-Gi 2010 tournament, whichtakes place Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13, at theJacob Javits Center in New York City, at the second annual MMA WORLDEXPO (http://www.mmaworldexpo.com/ ). This is an open grapplingtournament with numerous divisions, and will be a highlight of thisEXPO.
