International Judo Federation
Yesterday, the draw of the first edition of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix took place at the Meridian Hotel, in the city center. Abu Dhabi which means "Father of the Gazelle" was chosen by IJF to be the host of one of its Grand Prix tournaments in 2009.
Under the supervision of IJF General Treasurer, Naser Al-Tameemi (UAE), the competition will concern a total of 126 fighters (87 men and 39 women).
Even if it would have been great to have more competitors concerned, the level of the tomorrow and the day after tomorrow competitions will be high. Great judo countries like Japan or France made the trip to come over here, allong the banks of the Persian Golf.
All the categories were validated and drawn properly yesterday evening. For that, a minimum of 3 competitors coming from 3 different countries is needed and that was the case.

Today, on Friday the 20th of November,
the schedule is as follows for Men under 60, 66 and 73kg
and for women under 48, 52, 57 and 63kg:
- 7:00 to 7:30 - official weigh-in
- 13:00 - beginning of the competitions
- 17:00 - opening ceremony
- 17:30 - finals

The new refereing rules will be applied for the third time during a senior event this year. The first time that those rules were presented to the judokas and to the public was in Paris, for the World Junior Championship late October, with the great success that is already well known. Those rules which are still under testing, until the end of 2009, after the Grand Slam in Tokyo, have been also tested recently, for the seniors, at the Samoa and Ulaanbaatar World Cups. Thus, for instance, no direct leg grab under the belt will be allowed and the score will remain valid under the Golden Score period, which will be 3 minutes long.
